The perfect winter journey – two towns in wintry scene in just a week.
After just 4 ½ hours flight from Copenhagen you are in Kangerlussuaq, which is surrounded by a beautiful nature and a rich animal life. Originally Kangerlussuaq was built as an American military base, but are today a civil village with appr. 500 inhabitants. Kangerlussuaq is the port of Greenland. The climate is unusual steady with a high, clear sky most of the year and very little fall of rain. The winter days are cold, but intens and from the end of January the sun again comes up with full strength. Ilulissat means "icebergs" in Greenlandic and the village is beautifully situated at the mouth of the famous ice fiord, which is filled with huge icebergs from the most productive glacier on the northern hemisphere, Sermeq Kujalleq. The biggest icebergs are stranded at the mouth of the ice fiord at 250-300 metres depth, and they will first get free at high tide or when they are eroded so much that the fulcrum changes. Ilulissat Icefiord were in 2004 entered the UNESCO World Heritage List. Both in Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat you'll have good opportunities to buy a dog sledge tour, for many a visitor a big highlight from their winter journey to Greenland. Imagine exciting dogs, moving about impatiently while waiting for the start signal from their driver. The last harnesses are placed, you are ready to go, taking your seat at the sledge on the skin of reindeer, you dressed in sealskin, while the sun is shining on your face. The traces are tightened, the sledge starts moving, nature closes up around by, while the dogs eagerly takes you through the magnificent snowy landscape. Programme Day 1 Departure with GL781 in the morning from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq arriving before noon local time. A destination guide will pick you up and be of help when checking in at the youth hostel Old Camp, where you will stay the first two nights. In Kangerlussuaq a short information meeting will be held and we bid you welcome on a tour to the Ice Cap. Day and time for this tour will be announced later.
