The Disko Bay in Winter time - Experience 2 of the most beautiful places in North Greenland

Foto Konrad Seblon

This trip takes you to two of the most beautiful places in the Disko Bay. Ilulissat, which is known for its large and productive icefiord and Qeqertarsuaq, a smaller town located on the Disko Island, which has given the bay its name.

The first day you will be brought all the way by plane and helicopter to Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island. The city is a small community with approx. 1000 inhabitants. A small place where the traditional way of living and the hospitality of the Greenlandic people are even more characteristic than in the larger cities on the mainland. Here is the weather more determinative than the time and life goes its quiet though tough time under the arctic sky. In the winter period the sky is often high and clear and gives you views of stunning and unspoilt expanses.

In Qeqertarsuaq there is an opportunity for dog sledding in the valley behind the town. Imagine eager dogs impatiently for themselves while they wait for the start signal. The last belt is put in place, the sun bakes down and you are also ready and take a seat on the sled's reindeer skin. The traces are stretched and the sled is set in motion and brings nature at very close range, while the dogs happily run through the magnificent, snow-covered landscape.

Above the town you find the Lyngmark Glacier in the height of 8-900 meters. Here there are cottages, where it is possible to stay overnight. A perfect place to experience the northern lights far from man-made light - and in clear weather overlooking the entire bay.

After 3 days on the Disko Island the helicopter takes you back to Ilulissat, which means "Icebergs" in Greenlandic. The city is beautifully situated at the mouth of the well-known and famous Icefiord filled with enormous icebergs from the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, Sermeq Kujalleq. The largest icebergs strand in the mouth of the fjord on the depth of 250-300 meters and will come free at high tide or when they crack and become smaller. In 2004 Ilulissat Icefiord was included on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

A boat trip out among the gigantic icebergs is a must during a visit here. Ilulissat is also the centre of trafic, policy and tourism in North Greenland, and therefore - in Greenlandic standards - it is a large city with shops, infrastructure, culture and activity. Here you also have the opportunity to get a ride on a dogsled - perhaps to the small settlement Rodebay north of Ilulissat, where a lovely Greenlandic lunch can be enjoyed in the small restaurant.
