Musk ox safari No other place in Greenland are the musk oxen so numerous as in Kangerlussuaq. Originally the musk ox stock came from the Northeastgreenland, where 27 young animals were brought to Kangerlussuaq, back in 1962. As the growing condition in Kangerlussuaq is especially good you find more than 10,000 musk oxen today. To keep the stock at a reasonable level, it's permitted to shoot a certain amount of musk oxen every year. The tour is made by bus or minibusses. The Ice Cap The tour goes either to the ice cap at Point 660 or to the Russell Glacier. At Point 660 we can drive with cross-country vehicles actually up on the ice cap - the only place possible in Greenland. The tour to the Russell Glacier however goes off-road, where you meet the 50 metres high glacier-wall. Here you will find the impressive size and beauty of the ice cap. Sightseeing Hear about the exciting history of the air base Sondre Stromfiord from the beginning back in 1941 to the take over in 1992. You will be told the story of the activites on the ice cap from the cold war, where a network of radar stations should prevent surprise attacks from Soviet Russia. We make the tour by bus and visit among other places the harbour and the research center Kelly Ville, where they study the northern lights. Sea Kayaking Greenland is the homeland of kayaking and here are the perfect surroundings for a guided sea kayaking tour. After a thorough instruction we paddle in a modest pace along the shores of Tasersuatsiaq (Lake Ferguson). From our kayaks we have a great view to the mountain sides where musk oxen often grass alone or in small herds. In the eastern end of the lake the great northern diver roams and if we are lucky we spot arctic char (trout) in the crystal clear water beneath us or see the Greenlandic eagle in the great sky above. The go ashore on the tour for a good photo of musk oxen or to get a bit of a surprise of what we find here in the mountains. Before the tour ends there will be a demonstration of Greenlandic rolls. Trekking around Tasersuatsiaq (Lake Ferguson) A beautiful hike along the lake with a great view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Musk oxen are often numerous here and there is a rich birdlife with many sparrows, geese, great northern divers and if are lucky; falcon and Greenlandic eagle. Under way your guide will tell you about the landscape and nature as well as the history of the area since the first Saqqaq people came here 4000 years ago. We see traces of both ancient and more modern use of the area on our tour around the lake and we will have time for a good chat about whatever comes natural to us here in these fantastic surroundings. Hiking tour to Sugar Loaf and the Waterfall This short tour do not require special physically skills, but is a beautiful tour, where you will see the Waterfall, made by the melting water from the Ice Cap, and the fantastic view from the top of Sugar Loaf - a mountain resembling the old fashioned sugar loaf. Hiking tour to the Garnet Rock This full-time tour takes you hunting for the red sparkling garnets, and often we meet musk oxen on your way. We can also see the peregrine falcon, breeding on the descent mountain side of the Garnet Rock. The hike is about 15 km. Mountain bike – on your own You will find lots of possibilities for a ride on our mountain bikes, as there are a good many kilometres of roads, either with asphalt or gravel in the area around Kangerlussuaq. Northern lights evening The colourful scenery made by nature itself – the Northern lights – have fascinated people through years. In the winter darkness here in Kangerlussuaq you just lay back and enjoy the green, purple and red colours, like curtains waving across the sky. To conclude this tour we serve you Greenlandic coffee. Dog sledge tour A dog sledge tour is one of the most exciting winter experiences. 10-12 dogs, wagging its tail in excitement, taking you and your travelling companions together with the driver across the ice fiord, where the most impressive scenery appears in front of you. You have to be well dressed, so rental of warm seal skin clothes and warm boots are included. Ice fishing From the harbour we walk for a while out on the thick ice at Kangerlussuaq Fiord to find a good fishing spot. We drill a whole in the ice and try what to catch. Usually there will be lots of fish. Period January-April Duration 3 hours Price Adult DKK 385,- / Children 275,-
Camp Ice Cap This is an extraordinary chance where you may walk in the foot steps of Fridtjof Nansen and other great explorers. With an experienced guide, we do an easy walk from our 4 WD vehicle onto the Ice Cap towards Camp Ice Cap. When our expedition tents are set, we enjoy the complete silence and emptiness on the Greenland Ice Cap. After a night in our warm sleeping bags, under the midnight sun, we spend the second day on the ice, where we will look at some of the amazing features, such as glacial rivers and melt water lakes. Helicopter trip This is a truly unique experience. We will fly over glaciers and waterfalls and land the helicopter on a deserted island on the Ice Cap.
