Dog sledge tour
North of the polar circle the dog sledge driving is the main activity. Just lean back on the sledge and enjoy the 10-12 dogs, with wagging tails taking you, your travelling companions and the driver through the winter landscape, where you will be met by the impressive scenery - only disturbed by the soft sound from the runners, the dogs breathing and the driver calling. It is possible to rent warm clothes and boots for the sledge ride for DKK 300,-

Boat tour to the Ice Fiord - day or evening
The classic among the excursions in Ilulissat. We are looking out for the most magnificent icebergs in this the world's biggest sculpture park. The experience is overwhelming and light and colours are constantly changing. We are often sailing with the old wood cutters - the veterans of the Greenlandic ships.

Boat tour to the calving glacier - Eqi Sermia
The calving glacier is recommended to be seen from the waterside! After 3 hours of fantastic sailing we have the glacier in front of us. We do not go ashore, but cruises in front of the 5 km wide front. We will enjoy a delicious fish menu while waiting for the glacier to calve. And while waiting the crew will tell us about ice and glaciers. An unforgettable tour with huge opportunities for taking fantastic pictures.

Boat tour to the settlement Oqaatsut/Rodebay
Experience a day in the small fishing- and sealersettlement Oqaatsut/Rodebay, with its long and traditional past. Enjoy a delicious lunch in the cosy restaurant H8 in the former warehouse. From here you you will have a view over the ocean as well as to the fiord and in good weather the lunch will be served at the terrace right beside the water.

Hike to the old settlement at Sermermiut, the Ice Fiord
The tour leads you through the city to the former heliport, through the wide valley of Sermermiut to the world famous Ice Fiord. At this site Inuit from all immigranting cultures from appr. 2500 BC to 1850 AC have lived. The remains, now covered with grass, can easily bee seen. Ilulissat Ice Fiord is at the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Exciting tour by foot, where you will hear about history, culture, ecomomic and business life of the city. We will pass among other places, the Church of Zion and the museum in the birth place of Knud Rasmussen and the harbour.

Whale safari
Whales are swimming in the Disko Bay during all summer, sometimes close to town, other times in the ice fjord, or way up north. Constant radio contact with the fishermen and hunters are the source of information about the whales of the bay, so you will spot the whales on 95% of the trips. Humpback whale with the characteristic tail is the most seen.

By helicopter to the ice cap
Ilulissat Ice Fiord is the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere, producing 20 millions of ice a day. The fiord is seven kilometres wide and more than one kilometre thick, moving with a speed of almost one metre an hour! It's a fantastic sight to see these endless ice masses and the huge natural forces. The helicopter flies low over the icebergs in the ice fiord and along the glacier front. We land at the mountain at Kangia - in the middle of the protected are, entered the UNESCO World Heritage List. Here we make half an hour stop, where you can enjoy the scenery. Flying time appr. 50 minutes.

About Ilulissat

Ilulissat is Greenland's third largest city and is located in West Greenland in the Disko Bay, about 2 km north of the mouth of the Ilulissat Ice Fjord, where a large production of icebergs has given the city its Greenlandic name that simply means "icebergs". Most of the inhabitants of the city is engaged in the fishing industry and fisheries. In summer, fishing goes on from small boats and dinghies at the Icefiord Bank and in winter time the fishing is farther inside the fjord from the ice. The main catch and production is shrimp and Greenlandic halibut. All transportation in the winter is by dogsled or snowmobile.

Tourism is also a great source of revenue for the city, which each year is visited by thousands of tourists and numerous cruise ships. The city has a major port, airport and helicopter landing pad (heliport).

Mathias Storch, Jørgen Brønlund and the polar explorer Knud Rasmussen has had a major impact on the city's development. The latter two were born and raised in Ilulissat and monuments are raised for them both.
